Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity
With a $5 million gift from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, the School of Public Health established the Center for Antiracism Research for Health Equity. Rachel Hardemen, Blue Cross Endowed Professor of Health and Racial Equity, created the vision for the center and serves as its founding director.
Institute for Global Cancer Prevention Research
Irina Stepanov, Mayo Professor in the School of Public Health, has launched the Institute for Global Cancer Prevention Research. With initial funding from the School of Public Health, the Medical School, and the Masonic Cancer Center, the institute will focus on tobacco control, environmental causes of cancer, and infectious agents and cancer.
Center for Learning Health System Sciences
A first-of-its-kind collaboration between the Medical School and the School of Public Health established the Center for Learning Health System Sciences. A learning health system is a continuous improvement model that decreases the time it takes for science to make it into patient care and for evidence to be generated from care delivery. SPH Professor Timothy Beebe is the center’s deputy director.
Midwest Consortium for Hazardous Waste Worker Training
The School of Public Health is the new home for the Midwest Consortium for Hazardous Waste Worker Training. A five-year, $10 million award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) will fund the consortium and Professor Peter Raynor will lead its activities.
New education opportunities
Certificate in Healthcare Management for Behavioral Health
The School of Public Health and the Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies have come together to offer the Certificate in Healthcare Management for Behavioral Health. It is one of the only programs of its kind in the U.S.
Undergraduate Public Health Major
Coming in fall 2023, an undergraduate public health major. This junior-admitting Bachelor of Arts degree program will be part of the School of Public Health and enroll approximately 35-70 students in the first year. National data indicate that approximately 30% of those with a bachelor’s degree in public health will go on for further studies.
4 + 1 Environmental Health MPH
The Division of Environmental Health Sciences is leading an innovative arrangement that allows undergraduate students from the College of Biological Sciences (UMN Twin Cities) and the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences program (UMN Rochester) to graduate with both a BS and an MPH in environmental health in five years
